Job Title  Control System Specialist                                                                                                       Office Location  Roanoke, VA

General Role Description
Provide technical leadership and direction for the integration and design of large electric motor and drive system projects
applied to industrial markets with time horizons up to 2 years
Role Accountabilities
  • Optimize the design, engineering, and testing of new and existing MV motor and drive systems for new applications
  • Ensure that all functional requirements as determined by project specifications and functional design documents are met
  • Identify enhanced product or service feature needs by soliciting feedback from clients
  • Design competitive and viable technical approaches to resolve client issues
  • Ensure the project related deliverables comply with Business Unit engineering processes and procedures, including design standards and unit/system test plans
  • Review software and hardware designs of Control Engineers and/or suppliers to ensure defined functional requirements for the specified control system are met
  • Analyze and report product and service deficiencies to business unit management for continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate supplier proposals to determine the best technical and most economical solution for the application
  • Prepare detailed cost elements for the technical specification
  • Perform the witness test with clients, as necessary
  • Resolve installation conflicts, interferences, and other issues during manufacturing and commissioning phases, remotely or at site, as required
  • Identify required documentation and user manuals as part of the project deliverables in order to transfer essential knowledge to clients and end users
  • Assign and direct the work of assigned engineers to ensure the system is built and tested on time and within budget 
  • Assess client situations and propose competitive options applicable to the client’s individuals needs
  • Provide technical consulting, coaching and training of controls technologies to company and parent company engineering team members
  • Investigate control and system product failures and recommend corrective actions, as requested
  • Prepare detailed user guides and related documentation for new controls products or project features
  • Establish and update engineering standards, templates, and guidelines for MV motor and VFD systems
  • Travel to client or supplier site as needed to ensure application and control activity meets project goals
  • Identify opportunities, initiate and lead process improvement initiatives in the organization
  • Prepare and deliver presentations at technical conferences and meetings with clients, at client sites as necessary or as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering or equivalent via education and/or work experience
  • 7 years’ experience in control systems or application engineering experience in the medium voltage drive and motor systems with ratings over 10MW
  • Demonstrated experience with codes and standards related to the application and installation of medium voltage drive and motor systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering and product configuration tools commonly used with motor drives and level 1 systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of controls commonly used in motor drives and controls commonly used in level 1 industrial systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local area network communication technology commonly used with motor drives and level 1 systems
  • Demonstrated successful and positive personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external contacts
  • Demonstrated presentation skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office, software design and programming, test design, user interaction design, CAD/CA
  • Availability to travel domestically, approximately 10%, and internationally, approximately 10%, often with limited notice

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of science degree in electrical, systems, or computer engineering
  • 12 years’ experience in control systems or application engineering experience in the medium voltage drives and motor systems with ratings over 10MW.
  • Experience in oil & gas and/or mining industries
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships with foreign parent or subsidiary companies
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with TMEIC family of motor drive controls, level 1 controls, engineering tools, and product configuration tools
  • Demonstrated success leading teams, coaching, and directing the work of others
