Job Description

Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer for Virginia and southern West Virginia, is seeking 1st shift Management Trainees at our Salem, Virginia corporate headquarters.  Working as a Management Trainee in Parts and Service Operations will give you the opportunity to learn about Caterpillar equipment and our company.  You'll receive hands-on training, helping to direct the day-to-day parts and service work-flow and ensuring top-notch service is provided to our customers.  As your knowledge and skills grow, so too will your opportunities at Carter Machinery Company.  We seek highly motivated, hardworking individuals for our Management Trainee program. These opportunities are ideal for candidates seeking an entry-level opportunity in business management.  High mechanical aptitude and 4-year degree in Operations Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred.  Customer service background or demonstrated skills preferred.  Previous experience in heavy or rental equipment, or a similar environment, is a plus.

Required Skills:

  • Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have strong time management/organizational skills.
  • Excellent internal and external customer satisfaction skills.
  • Strong PC and administrative skills, with the ability to adapt to changing technology.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks at once and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Able to work hours required to meet job and customer demands.

Physical Requirements:

Must meet physical requirements for the job, including the ability sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.  Able to lift, carry and maneuver items up to 20 pounds in weight.
