Job Description The Montgomery County Fire-EMS Department is seeking a Fire Lieutenant. This position serves as a company officer supervising a crew of firefighters assigned to an apparatus, and be able to assume the role of Incident Commander for the initial 20-30 minutes of most incidents. Supervisory duties include prioritizing and assigning work, assisting with performance evaluations, and ensuring staff are trained and developed. Performs technical work providing fire suppression, human health emergency medical services, and stabilization procedures at scenes. The position is normally assigned to a 12-hour shift in the eastern area of Montgomery County.  Duties are performed under emergency conditions and frequently involve considerable personal hazard, including heavy physical effort.  The candidate must have familiarity of the geographical layout of Montgomery County and the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, including streets, roads, and major landmarks. This position drives and operates department vehicles and assists in the maintenance and repair of station and equipment.  Candidates must be able to work well with other emergency services personnel, often under hazardous and stressful conditions, and may serve as the Department’s liaison with other public safety entities while operating at the scene of calls for service.
High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or higher preferred.  Experience required; five years of experience as a firefighter.  Experience preferred; 8 years of experience as a firefighter, with supervisory/management experience. The successful candidate must have a valid Virginia driver’s license, Virginia EMT certification, ICS-100, 200, 700, 800, VDFP Firefighter I, VDFP Firefighter II, VDFP Hazmat Operations, VA approved emergency vehicle operator’s course, VDFP Driver/Pump Operation (within one year of hire), ICS 300 (within one year of hire), VDFP Fire Instructor I, VDFP Fire Officer I (within one year of hire).  The candidate must be able to successfully complete a written and physical agility test, and pass an NFPA 1582 annual physical.
