The Associate Director of Information Security Operations reports to the University IT Security Officer and will engage with departments within the Division of Information Technology, as well as with IT representatives in academic departments and administrative offices university-wide, to implement tools and controls that reflect business and operational needs balanced with legal and regulatory requirements and risks. The Associate Director will help coordinate security operations, legal and regulatory requirements, security governance, and IT risk across departments and offices. They will assist the IT Security Officer to maintain and advance the information security operations program that defines how information security technical controls are managed and measured. The Associate Director will work with IT Security Office staff to support university-wide vulnerability assessment and management, security monitoring, and security metrics and reporting. This position will collaborate with senior leaders inside and outside the university to understand the needs, challenges, and solutions related to information security at Virginia Tech.Responsibilities include:● Maintain security metrics program to assess and understand university-wide informationsecurity trends over time● Coordinate broad scale security initiatives that build processes and tools for mitigating risk, and efficiently meeting the security requirements of the university● Build collaborative internal relationships across the Division of IT and the university to improve information flow regarding security requirements, available services and resources, and IT security status● Participate in research that evaluates gaps in security and identify solutions to reduce risk,including business processes, technical controls, or policy improvements● Assist Division of IT senior leaders and others with strategic and operational planning as related to information security, working alongside the University IT Security Officer in promoting,building, and advancing security practices across all units● Partner with other Information Security team members to collectively build and drive theInformation Security Program, Strategy, and Roadmap● Work both independently and collaboratively with departments to set and/or implementpolicies, procedures and systems as directed by the IT Security Officer
● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or arelated field● Experience investigating cyberattacks against networks and systems● Experience in IT security operations● Experience developing ideas, gaining stakeholder support, and leading projects● Understanding of systems, services, applications, and networks used at a large researchuniversity or similar environment
● Advanced degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, InformationTechnology, or related field● Experience with cloud services such as AWS, Azure, and GCP● Hands-on system administration experience with enterprise production services● Understanding of common protocols including TCP/IP, IPv4, IPv6● Experience managing or working in a Security Operations Center (SOC)● Experience with log analysis tools such as Splunk, ELK, or a SIEM● Experience with Intrusion Detection Tools such as Snort, Argus, Zeek, OSSEC● Experience with forensic practices and tools such as Encase, FTK, or Autopsy● Industry recognized certifications in security (CISSP, CEH, GIAC certs, etc.)● Experience conducting research and reporting results
