Job Description

Atalan Tech is seeking a dynamic Vice President of Engineering to lead their technical efforts and drive innovation in their AI-powered platform that prevents clinician burnout. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will collaborate with key leaders to create and execute a comprehensive technology strategy. The successful candidate will oversee the development of robust, scalable solutions, leveraging data from EHR and backend systems to deliver actionable insights. This role is crucial to shaping Atalan Tech’s technology vision, requiring a strategic mindset, hands-on leadership, and the ability to guide a lean team of engineers and data scientists in delivering cutting-edge solutions.

The Role
Title: Vice President of Engineering
Reports To: CEO, Tiffany Chan
Location: Boston/ Mid-Atlantic Region

Responsibilities:
• Lead and mentor a high-performing lean team of software engineers, data scientists, and architects, fostering a culture of excellence in software development and innovation.
• Develop and execute a comprehensive technology strategy aligned with Atalan Tech’s business goals, focusing on scalable and secure solutions.
• Lead the design, development, and optimization of Atalan Tech’s core platform, incorporating advanced AI/ML technologies to deliver actionable insights from EHR and backend data systems.
• Develop and execute an enterprise data layer strategy.
• Collaborate with the Product team to prioritize and refine requirements, ensuring timely and high-quality product releases.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges, actively engaging with cross-functional teams and clients to address issues and risks.
• Establish success metrics and implement processes to ensure scalable, repeatable, and measurable outcomes.
• Oversee day-to-day engineering operations, including sprint planning, resource allocation, and risk management.
• Stay ahead of industry trends, incorporating innovative technologies to maintain a competitive edge and meet evolving client needs.
• Represent Atalan Tech’s engineering vision in communications with executive leadership, clients, and investors.

The Person

Education: Advanced degree in related field preferred Qualifications and Experience:
• 10+ years of experience leading software engineering and data science teams, preferably in smaller, agile organizations.
• Strong technical expertise in software engineering, with proficiency in Python and frameworks such as Django; familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS is a plus).
• Proven ability to build and scale backend systems that integrate and analyze large datasets, particularly in healthcare-related domains like EHR data.
• Experience with managing DevOps and automating processes to create efficiency.
• Deep knowledge of AI and machine learning applications, with experience incorporating these technologies into software platforms.
• Exceptional leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring and growing technical teams.
• Experience managing distributed teams, including both onshore and offshore resources.
• Understanding of security requirements and processes, such as HIPAA, SOC2, or HITRUST, for handling sensitive data.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and lead client-facing technical discussions.
• A hands-on leader with a strategic mindset, capable of balancing immediate needs with long-term product development goals.
• Knowledge of the healthcare industry is preferred but not mandatory; experience with data-intensive software solutions is essential.
