The Innovation Manager (IM) will have the unique opportunity to vanguard and own the Invention Accelerator programs. Additionally, manage a team and funds to meet accelerator goals. The Invention Accelerator programs are designed for developing and de-risking Carilion inventions to advance the inventions to commercialization. The programs methodologies are anchored in human-centered design, lean startup, and agile. The IM works with Carilion innovators and their promising commercialize-able inventions to advise and inform invention development strategy, scope projects, project management, and collaborate and provide stakeholder management. The IM will closely collaborate with the Commercialization arm of CCI on overall invention strategy.
The IM oversees the operations and expansion of CCI’s Makerspace, an invention development resource equipped with a range of prototyping capabilities.
Additionally, work collaboratively with our internal and regional partners: Carilion Department of Research and Development (R&D), Carilion Human Factors Department, Virginia Tech, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, University of Virginia, external product development and design firms, vendors, and many others
Duties & Responsibilities may include but not limited:
Provide leadership and supervision to projects in support of CCI. Act as liaison across disciplinary teams to lead projects which impact other areas.
Responsible to track project and program activities and outcomes.
Responsible for maintaining accurate, continuous communication with clients, team members, all project stakeholders, and Carilion leadership throughout the life of each project, ensuring thorough evaluation and prioritization of efforts.
Work in collaboration with the Director of Innovation; develop, implement and update processes for the Invention Accelerator programs, from inception to completion, including scope, definition, planning, tracking, and evaluation of outcomes and determination of next steps.
Provide comprehensive agile project management – Assist with building project proposals, allocate funding, obtain funding approvals, review and track budgets, resource procurement and planning, project timeline management, facilitate development sprints, conduct reviews and product demos.
Manage Makerspace, Innovation Engineer, and Innovation Analyst. Create new positions and initiatives to meet the needs of our inventions, inventors, and ecosystem as necessary.
Direct, motivate and counsel Innovators as appropriate.
Other duties and responsibilities as they are identified, and as the commercialization environment for Carilion Clinic evolves and matures.

Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's, MBA, or Ph.D. Degree preferred.
Experience: 4 Years experience in Project/Product Management, or recent demonstrated project success of a Carilion multi-department leadership project.
Minimum of five (5) years leadership or healthcare equivalent experience preferred.
Experience in commercializing intellectual property, product management, research, and tech transfer in health care and related environments.
Experience using human-centered design, lean startup methodologies, and agile development.
