Job Description

Position Summary:

MELD Manufacturing Corporation is seeking a highly skilled Automation Engineer to lead the design and development of complex automated machinery. This role focuses on mechanical system architecture, precision machine design, and integration of advanced manufacturing processes.

The engineer will be responsible for designing robust, high-performance equipment and will work closely with Controls Engineers who lead programming, automation logic, and system controls integration. The ideal candidate is a hands-on designer with deep experience in custom machinery, capable of taking systems from concept through build, test, and deployment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical System Design
    • Design and develop complex, custom machinery, including structural frames, motion systems, tooling, and precision assemblies.
    • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
    • Perform tolerance analysis, stress analysis, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
    • Select and size mechanical components such as bearings, actuators, linear motion systems, and drive mechanisms.
  • Machine Architecture and Integration
    • Define mechanical system architecture and ensure seamless integration with electrical and control systems.
    • Collaborate closely with Controls Engineers to ensure mechanical designs support efficient automation, sensing, and control strategies.
    • Design for accessibility, serviceability, and safety within automated systems.
    • Develop system layouts, including machine footprints and assembly configurations.
  • Build Test and Validation
    • Support fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of equipment.
    • Lead mechanical system debugging, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
    • Design and support system validation activities.
    • Refine designs based on testing results and operational feedback.
  • Cross Functional Collaboration
    • Work with Controls Engineers to coordinate mechanical requirements for sensors, wiring, and control hardware placement.
    • Partner with manufacturing and operations teams to transition designs into production-ready systems.
    • Collaborate with materials and process engineers to optimize machine performance for MELD’s advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Continuous Improvement and Innovation
    • Identify opportunities to improve machine reliability, performance, and efficiency.
    • Research and incorporate new materials, mechanisms, and manufacturing techniques.
    • Contribute to design standards, best practices, and modular system development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design of automated equipment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and engineering documentation.
  • Strong understanding of machine design principles, including kinematics, dynamics, and materials.
  • Experience with precision mechanical systems and multi-axis motion assemblies.
  • Familiarity working alongside controls/automation teams in integrated systems.

Preffered

  • Experience in advanced manufacturing environments (e.g., additive manufacturing, friction stir processes, CNC machinery).
  • Knowledge of basic controls concepts (PLC interfaces, sensors, actuators) to support cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience with FEA tools and simulation software.
  • Exposure to hydraulic, pneumatic, or thermal systems design.

Key Competencies

  • Strong mechanical design and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage complex assemblies and system-level designs.
  • Effective collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on quality, performance, and safety.
  • Hands-on mindset with a passion for building and testing equipment.

Why Join MELD Manufacturing?

  • Design innovative machinery supporting next-generation manufacturing processes.
  • Work in a highly collaborative, engineering-driven environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge solid-state manufacturing technology.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
